This limited edition 2018 vintage chardonnay is made at Blackbook's urban winery in Battersea with grapes sourced from Greyfrair's Vineyard in the North Downs of the Surrey Hills. "In 2018, I travelled around England recording a podcast on English wine. Sergio Verillo was the very last winemaker I interviewed about three weeks before the grapes were coming in from harvest. 2018 was England's best vintage on record. An almost perfect growing season.
Three weeks after that interview, some chardonnay from Greyfriars vineyard arrived, which made this wine. That chardonnay was whole-bunched fermented, and underwent natural fermentation using indigensous yeasts. It then spent 20 months in barrel on the lees. Akin to the great white Burgundies.
The result is the exceptional Pygmalion. A rich white chardonnay, with citrus, melon and nutty aromas. There's only 124 cases produced, and we've bought eight of them. Olly Smith said this is the English chardonnay to beat Burgundy, and he may well be right." - JL
